Other Opportunities: Summer 2016 Algebra Academy with Graniterock (August 8-August 13, 2016 plus some advance planning meetings)

Locally-based construction management and supply business Graniterock sponsors an Algebra Academy (http://algebraacademy.net) for middle school students. It kicks off with a week-long intensive summer mathematics workshop for rising 8th graders. UCSC Math Department’s Nandini Bhattacharya leads the instruction for one group of about 50 students from schools in Santa Cruz, Monterey, and San Benito Counties. Our Cal Teach National Science Foundation Noyce Teacher Scholars grant provides funding for up to four Cal Teach interns to serve as classroom assistants, led by Nandini. Opportunities for follow up work with the students during 2016-17 are likely.

Planning and prep work for the Algebra Academy instructional team will begin at UCSC prior to the week of August 8. The summer program will be based at Graniterock headquarters in Watsonville. Students will be present August 8-12 ,9 am - 4 pm at Graniterock, where the focus will be on mathematics. Some time will be spent on basic skills development and some on enrichment activities, like math games and presentations from Graniterock staff. The week will include a field trip to Cal State Monterey Bay, most likely on Wednesday. A graduation ceremony will take place in Watsonville on Saturday morning August 13. Interns must be available to participate fully and assist with all program activities.

The internship stipend will be $750, paid after the Algebra Academy week.

Interested Cal Teach interns, including June 2016 graduates, who have completed at least CaT1, may apply by emailing Gretchen Andreasen (gha@ucsc.edu) by March 20. Your email should include brief statements (1-4 sentences for each question) explaining:

1) your availability the dates of the program;
2) any teaching experience you have outside of Cal Teach;
3) your current career goals;
4) what you think you will learn by participating in this opportunity; and
5) what you have to offer the Algebra Academy program.

We will refer to your Cal Teach record and UCSC transcripts in evaluating your application. Interviews will be scheduled the first week of spring quarter, starting March 28 (~20 minutes each applicant).
