Gretchen Andreasen

Gretchen Andreasen completed a B.A. in Geology, at Oberlin College, and a Ph.D. in Earth Sciences at UCSC. She spent over a year on research ships at sea as a technician and a scientist, mostly aboard the R/V JOIDES Resolution, operated by the Ocean Drilling Program. She started working with pre-service and in-service science teachers as a post-doctoral fellow in UCSC's Education Department. She later supported science and math outreach efforts from UCSC's Educational Partnership Center, including serving as the first director of UCSC's California State Summer School for Math and Science (COSMOS) program for high school students. She has taught in the Earth Sciences Department at UCSC and in the Geology and Meteorology Department at Kean University in New Jersey. As the Cal Teach Director at UCSC, Gretchen works to improve UCSC's support of prospective science and math teachers and increase the number of science, math, and engineering undergraduates who pursue secondary teaching careers.

Brett Bell

Brett graduated from UCSC in 2012 with a combined degree in Environmental Studies and Biology. Since completing his degree he has worked with junior high, high school, and college students in a number of teaching and mentorship roles. Wearing different hats as an outdoor school science instructor, track and cross country coach, camp counselor, residential program coordinator, and advisor, Brett brings a variety of educational program experience and student involvement to our team. As a former Cal Teach participant himself, he is excited to serve the program from a different perspective.

Tammy Bye

Tammy graduated from Michigan State University with a BS in Zoology. After graduating, she was inspired by an educational internship at the Shedd Aquarium and pursued a career in education. Teaching for over 20 years in various environments, Tammy started in outdoor education at Queens College Center in New York and later moved to Catalina Island Marine Institute in California. At both places, she guided students to explore, make connections and experience the natural world, sometimes for the first time. Tammy then earned her teaching credential in 2001 from California State University at Monterey Bay. She was excited to incorporate hands-on constructivist learning into math and science classrooms. Starting in 2005, Tammy taught 6th and 7th grade math and science at Shoreline Middle School, where she also hosted Cal Teach interns and served as a UCSC cooperating teacher. As the Cal Teach Internship Coordinator, Tammy looks forward to inspiring STEM undergraduates to pursue teaching credentials, and to seeing the next generation of passionate math and science teachers grow.

Lea Evans

Lea is originally from Tucson, Arizona, but came to Cal Teach from northwestern Arkansas where she was teaching English as a Second Language to international students. Her first experience with teaching came when she was living in Santiago, Chile, after finishing her B.A. in International Studies at the University of Arizona. Upon returning from Chile, she completed her M.A. in English Language/Linguistics, while teaching introductory Spanish at the university, and ESL in an adult education program. In California, she has taught Spanish part-time and is very happy to be part of the Cal Teach team, working to help those starting out in the teaching profession.
