She has spent over a year at sea as a technician and a scientist on different deep-sea research expeditions, mostly aboard the R/V JOIDES Resolution, operated by the Ocean Drilling Program. She has worked with pre-service and in-service science teachers as a post-doctoral fellow in UCSC's Education Department integrating scientific data collection and analysis into instruction. She supported many science and math outreach efforts from UCSC's Educational Partnership Center, including serving as the first director of UCSC's California State Summer School for Math and Science (COSMOS) program for high school students. She has taught in the Earth Sciences Department at UCSC and in the Geology and Meteorology Department at Kean University in New Jersey. As the Cal Teach Resource Center Director at UCSC, Gretchen is working to improve UCSC's support of prospective science and math teachers and increase the number of science, math, and engineering undergraduates who pursue secondary teaching careers.
