UCSC Math Subject Matter Waiver Program
Home › Advising

UCSC's Math Department offers a Subject Matter Waiver (a.k.a. Subject Matter Preparation) Program for prospective secondary math teachers. This means that the program was approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTCC). Thus, students who complete all requirements for this program will not need to take the CSET exams in math before entering a credential program.

The Subject Matter Waiver Program is similar to the Mathematics Education Track Major, but not exactly the same. There are three additional requirements to receive the waiver: EDUC 185B, Intro to Teaching Mathematics; one of the following: Math 24, Math 30, Math 115, CMPE 16; and, CMPS 10, CMPS 60G, or CMPS 60N.

The Subject Matter Program is overseen by UCSC's Math and Education Departments. To learn more about the requirements, visit the Math Department's website: www.math.ucsc.edu/undergraduate/education.html or contact the Math Department's Undergraduate Advisor, Andrea Gilovich, at gilovich@ucsc.edu.
