Press Release
Announcing the
Mark Bruce Fellowship for Math and Science Teachers
2010-11
With this generous fellowship, Stephen (Cowell, ’79) and Mona Bruce honor Stephen’s late brother Mark Bruce. The
fellowships are intended to encourage and promote science and math teachers and to create demand for UCSC-trained math and science teachers.
The fellowship is awarded based on
academic merit, potential as a secondary teacher, and financial need. A committee representing UCSC’s
Cal Teach program, the Education Department, and the Physical and Biological Sciences Division
selects the fellowship recipients. Up to five awards of $3,000-$10,000 each are offered to students
accepted into the incoming M.A./credential class. Awards are evenly divided to offset tuition costs in
fall, winter, and spring quarters of the M.A./credential program.
Eligibility
Applicants must be UCSC Cal Teach graduates (having completed at least one Cal Teach internship prior to applying to UCSC's MA/credential program) planning to pursue the M.A./teaching credential at UCSC.
Timeline
The deadline to apply for consideration for the fellowship is February 1, 2010. Awards will be
announced along with offers of admission to UCSC's MA/credential program.
Application process
Students wishing to be considered for the fellowship should submit the application materials to the Cal
Teach office in Thimann Labs by the February 1 deadline.
