MARK BRUCE FELLOWSHIP FOR MATH & SCIENCE TEACHERS

The Mark Bruce Fellowship for Math and Science Teachers will be awarded annually to up to three UCSC Cal Teach or CMST graduates accepted into the UCSC Education Department's Masters Credential program.

The fellowship is made possible by a generous donation from Stephen ('79 Cowell) and Mona Bruce in honor of his brother who died in the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center.

Press Release

Announcing the
Mark Bruce Fellowship for Math and Science Teachers
2008-09

With this generous fellowship, Stephen (Cowell, ’79) and Mona Bruce honor Stephen’s late brother
Mark Bruce and support future math and science teachers. The fellowship is awarded based on
academic merit, potential as a secondary teacher, and financial need. Its goal is to strengthen the pool
of future math and teachers in UCSC’s M.A./credential program. A committee representing UCSC’s
Cal Teach program, the Education Department, and the Physical and Biological Sciences Division
selects the fellowship recipients. Three or more awards of up to $10,000 each are offered to students
accepted into the incoming M.A./credential class. Awards are evenly divided to offset tuition costs in
fall, winter, and spring quarters of the M.A./credential program.

Eligibility
Applicants must be UCSC Cal Teach or CMST graduates pursuing the M.A./teaching credential at
UCSC.

Timeline
The deadline to apply for consideration for the fellowship is February 14, 2008. Awards will be
announced by April 15, 2008.

Application process
Students wishing to be considered for the fellowship should submit the following materials to the Cal
Teach office in Thimann Labs by the February 14 deadline:

1) a cover letter of 1-2 pages detailing your financial need for the fellowship,
2) a copy of the Statement of Purpose you submitted as part of your application for admission to
the M.A./credential program,
3) a copy of the Personal History Statement you submitted as part of your application for
admission to the M.A./credential program, and
4) an unofficial copy of your UCSC transcript, including narrative evaluations.

In addition to these materials, the committee will also consider applicants’ performance in Cal Teach
or CMST and the Education Department’s assessment of the M.A./credential application file.
Together, these materials will be used by the committee to assess academic merit, potential as a
teacher, and financial need for each application.

Application materials may be delivered, faxed, or mailed to:
