•TEACHER OF THE YEAR AWARD• Generous Cal Teach benefactors, Stephen and Mona Bruce, have committed to support a new prize, the UCSC Cal Teach Mentor Teacher of the Year! The Teacher of the Year will be a math or science teacher who has inspired or supported the path of a Cal Teach intern toward teaching. The Teacher of the Year will be recognized at the campus’ annual teaching award ceremony, receive a $2,500 personal prize, receive a $1,000 prize for his or her school, and be the guest of honor at a Cal Teach dinner honoring all nominees. We invite all past and present UCSC students who have or will have completed at least one Cal Teach internship by winter quarter 2008 to nominate a favorite teacher for this award by March 31 (the first day of spring quarter). To nominate a teacher, submit a complete nomination form and a 200-500 word nomination letter. A successful letter will convincingly describe specific inspirational characteristics of the nominee’s teaching and mentoring as well as the nominee’s impact on the student’s career path. The form and letter should be submitted electronically by March 31 via e-mail to calteach@ucsc.edu. A selection committee consisting of the Physical and Biological Sciences Division Dean, the Education Department Chair, the Cal Teach Resource Center Director and faculty Co-directors, and a Cal Teach student will select the top 3-5 nominees. Cal Teach will solicit supporting letters from the principal or department chair of these top candidates describing their skills as a teacher and role in the teaching community. The Mentor Teacher of the Year will be selected by the committee based on both letters.
